How to place your first football bet at a Las Vegas sportsbook like a pro

The Texans are favorites, indicated by the (-) sign and the Dolphins are underdogs or ‘dogs’ indicated by the (+) sign. You just spent (invested) $110, you deserve a free cocktail.. You can also view this information up above your head on the big, brightly lit boards, but it’s easier to grab a paper copy to study at your leisure.Find the team that you are convinced will win. The bottom or second team listed is always the home team and has the home field advantage.Look at that point spread again. And finally, consider tipping the helpful Ticket Writer a dollar or two or ten. You win if they win by any number of points. Again, CHECK YOUR TICKET FOR ACCURACY, thank the Ticket Writer and ask for a drink ticket and enjoy the game.

A few final notes. ALL bets must be placed in person, but you do not need to be in Vegas to win or collect. Or $37 to win $10 + your $37 bet. Look back at your sheet under the M/L column. The -7 1/2 under the line column indicates the Texans are 7 1/2 point favorites. It can get you more drink tickets and even better service on your next visit.

Or, find your team and bet numbers for the game, walk up to the window and tell the ticket writer that you would like to bet $110 on the OVER (or UNDER) in the Texans/Dolphins game #465/466. Notice that the Texans are the ‘bottom’ team of the two teams listed. Walk up to the betting window and tell the Ticket Writer that you would like to straight bet or just bet $110 on #466. Or you could bet the Dolphins for $100 and win $300 + your $100 bet for a total of $400 back – IF the Dolphins win.Another way you can bet on this game is to bet the total. It is customary to bet in increments of $11 ($22, $33, $55,…$1100, etc.) when straight betting/point spread betting. If the underdog Dolphins win outright, tie or lose by seven points (or less) the Dolphins are declared the winner for betting purposes and you lose. The Texans are -370 and Dolphins +300. This is optional when placing your bets, but a tradition when cashing your winning tickets. You can bet the moneyline, that is bet the Texans to win by laying $370 to win $100 + your $370 bet. This is the moneyline. Or for the same rates, you can bet that the COMBINED score will be UNDER 43 points. DO NOT LOSE YOUR TICKET. Each sportsbook (or group of sportsbooks) have established minimum bets and maximum bets, ask the Ticket Writer about minimum bets if you’re a Low Roller or maximum bet limits if you are a High Roller.

Or, find your team and bet number and walk up to the window and tell the Ticket Writer that you would like to place a $37 moneyline bet on #466 the Houston Texans. See the 43 in the total column? If you believe that both teams are healthy, happy and the weather will be perfect and you KNOW this game will be a high scoring game OVER 43 combined points, you can bet $11 (or $110) to win $10 + your $11 (or $100 + your $110) back. You could just as easily bet $370 or $3700. In this example, if you straight bet the Texans, they must win by EIGHT points or more in order for you to win your bet. Remember that OVERTIME COUNTS when betting totals.

Ready? Find your team and the bet number. Remember that IF your team wins AND covers the spread you will get back your original bet PLUS $10 for each $11 dollars bet. For your $110 bet you would get $210 back when you cash your winning ticket after the game. Can you see why point spreads of 3, 7 and even 10 and 14 are extremely important? And to add to your stress, point spreads fluctuate up and down as the kick-off approaches. When straight betting or betting the spread that team must cover the spread. Good choice, the Texans are 7 1/2 point favorites. Good Luck.

In Vegas for the weekend and you’d like to place a friendly wager on your favorite team but don’t know where (or how) to begin? Follow these simple step-by-step instructions and you’ll be able to walk up to the casino sportsbook window and place your first NFL or college football bet like a pro.

Stop by the book, short for sportsbook, and pick up the current week’s odds sheet for the sport (in this example NFL football) you are interested in. Remember that teams that cover the point spread win. Now, CHECK YOUR TICKET FOR ACCURACY and if you drink, ask for a drink ticket when you place your bet. Ask the sportsbook staff about mailing and cashing your winning tickets from out of state. As above, CHECK YOUR TICKET FOR ACCURACY, thank the Ticket Writer and ask for a drink ticket and relax.

Now, go pick up your odds sheets, pick some winners and step up to the window. Las Vegas runs on tips and good service should be rewarded. ALL bets must be placed BEFORE kickoff. More on that in future articles. What if you still like the Texans to win but heard about some key player injuries or weather changes or other factors that could affect the team’s performance on Sunday? You are still convinced they will win but not sure if they will win by MORE than a touchdown. The point spread is always placed to the right of the team that is favored. Now find the corresponding bet number next to your team and circle it. In this example you have selected #466 the Houston Texans

Gambling Addict’s Guide to Scratch-off Lottery Tickets

I can’t tell them to give it up completely because it would be hypocritical to do so.

And that’s the best thing anyone suffering from gambling addiction could hope for.

It’s a lot more fun playing a game without risking your livelihood for it.

Play at Your Own Risk!

You don’t have to quit buying scratch-off tickets (you should try to), but there have to be limits. Five dollar scratch-off: The addict is raising the stakes and requires monitoring. Each one carries great risk to someone who’s struggling with gambling addiction or is on the cusp of it.

The damage gets taken up a notch if both the quantity and quality are very high. It could alleviate some of the pain addicts suffer, but then again, they’d find other outlets to gamble or gamble in secret (could be worse). Board games and non-betting card games are always fun to play without risk. Do you know how much someone buying over a hundred tickets that are worth 20 dollars spends?

When I used to see scratch-offs, my victim’s mentality believed that maybe the next ticket will be the “big one”. For some it could be a way to relax and socialize if the stakes are low, but the risks rapidly escalate once bets increase.

I use the “Lucktastic” app on my Android phone because it’s free, fun, and is a virtual scratch-off game. It’s a small little taste that keeps the psyche in check

Scratch-off lottery tickets don’t even have to be the victim’s gateway drugs into higher stakes. Twenty dollar scratch-off: Mayday, mayday, the addict is on the loose. The Scratch-off Lottery Ticket: Good or Evil?

We’ve all seen them when walking into a convenience or liquor store, but what do they really represent?

Here I’ll examine the values of each scratch-off ticket and what they really mean to a gambler who buys it:

5. A lot of sports betting and wagering is done secretly or privately.

Lottery tickets of any kind don’t have to be a gateway into something bigger, but they were for former sufferers like myself. It’s main focus is to address common concerns for those suffering with gambling addiction. An occasional purchase of this ticket is not harmful, but it could be a sign of things to come

But the point is that it’s a lot of money to be shelling out over scratch-off tickets, and what if the person spends that much money every month or week? The sum would rapidly add up and that alone could force them into massive debt.

For most people, they’re fun little pieces of paper that might bring us luck. If you gradually pull away from them, then they’ll slowly diminish in importance and necessity. Eventually increase the time so those 10 tickets a week become 2-4 tickets every other week or so.. You don’t want to spend a lot of money (if any) for fake tokens on an app.

3. Ten dollar scratch-off: Warning! The gambler is feeling hostile on the inside and is getting riskier with their money. However that same piece of paper could drive an addict with gambling disorder insane. Immediate attention is required and they’re about to take things to the next level!

For gambling addicts, it’s a combination of all three. These days there are apps on your phone that resemble scratch-offs.

Easy math: $2,000 dollars duh

(I’m strongly against any type of underground and illegal gambling)

Alternatives to Lottery Scratch-off Tickets

So you like buying scratch-offs eh? Is it because of how they look, the paper they’re printed on, or that maybe you’ll win an occasional prize?

For example, if you buy 10 tickets a week then shoot for 8 the next week and 6 the week after that. I’m going off the laws in New Jersey because I know they vary elsewhere.

The face value of the ticket hasn’t change, but the quantity did and that’s important to keep in mind. Why don’t you try a game of Monopoly or an enlightening game of Scrabble.

As with other addictions, the addict has to change their mindset and gradually tear away from the source. One dollar ticket: A single purchase of this ticket is akin to a quick hit for a smoker. A few of these is like smoking a whole pack of cigarettes, which is never a good thing.

“Caesar’s Slots and Free Casino” is one of my favorites because of the variety of games and fun activities.

2. One of those situations above is acceptable, but the other represents either a loss of control or the beginning stages of gambling disorder if they don’t already have it.

The only problem is that some of those apps want you to purchase in game tokens with real money if you run out of the tokens they give you. Gradually decrease the amount of tickets you buy every week, and then increase the time between purchases.

So what can be done and what alternatives are there to decrease the temptation of walking into a liquor store and buying hundreds of tickets?

Card games have historically been a popular outlet for gamblers, and a lot of underground (illegal) “Poker” arenas have been established for this reason. It also seeks out non-gambling methods to help victims. If you know someone who has a gambling problem, then you should pay close attention to what they buy, what it’s for, how many they buy, and how much they spend.

Quantity over Quality Matters

The value of a ticket is one thing, but how many they purchase is an entirely unique concern.

There are other free methods the app allows you to try that will give you tokens, and I’d highly recommend that instead.

Another option would be to play a game that doesn’t involve risking money. Until I realized that I was being naive and non-sensible in my thought process.

False Gambler’s Mentality: The jackpot could be right here in this store; I should buy a ticket to see.

That kind of thinking will only drain your money faster, and you’d be better off either avoiding places that sell tickets or seek friendly alternatives. There are a variety of different digital scratch-offs and you won’t have to pay a dime to access them. They already have enough risk associated with them if a gambler purchases bunches of them weekly. It’s okay to one once in a while, but it’s a bad omen.

That doesn’t sound like a bad idea. They can be pretty to look at, the colored art looks interesting, and the thought of winning floats might around in your head.

Even so, the scratch-off ticket is mostly played for entertainment and won’t cost you more than a couple of bucks. For them it’s not just a game, it’s their gateway drug towards bigger and riskier pathways.

Find out below.

Instead decrease how much you spend and how often you buy them. Hopefully you can quit buying them altogether because then you’re eliminating the risks completely.

Part of that was due to age restrictions because you can’t gamble at a casino if you’re under 21, and you have to be 18 or over to buy scratch-off tickets. Two dollar ticket: It’s a slightly stronger taste but nothing noteworthy. It started out with friendly wagers and scratch-offs, and the result turned into gambling at the casinos.

Other apps I enjoy using are casino and slot games because they’re free and replicate the sights and sounds of real world casinos.

Disclaimer: This article is not intended to support and/or promote gambling for money.

The Value of the Scratch-off

No scratch-off is the same and each have their own values and prizes, but how much does a ticket’s worth correlate to the intensity of the addiction (or is there no correlation). You could also win different prizes and tokens for gift cards/cash.

Okay so some of those are exaggerated, but they represent a real problem. Yeah chances are we’re not going to win much, if anything, but there’s always the possibility we’ll hit the jackpot someday.

There are several countries that ban gambling altogether.

4. A known gambler who spends only a dollar for one ticket is different from another addict that spends 100 dollars for 100 one dollar tickets.

Most Famous Robberies in History

They captured and handcuffed him. They quietly let the robbers in, who made off with more than 25 million.

Colonel Thomas Blood (1671)

The Mona Lisa was not to be seen for another two years, when the real thief tried to sell the painting to the Uffizi Gallery out of desperation. They traveled to Bridego Bridge, under which they kept a van. In a way, it was the painting that made the criminal famous, and it was the theft itself that made the painting even more popular. To carry this loot out, he either took the help of the clergy which he bribed, or possibly friends of his. When they entered, they subdued the employees and the other guards by pouring petrol over them and threatening to set them on fire if they did not comply. Both were held for questioning but were later exonerated.

This is what happens when a man tries to manipulate the system for gains when he is unable to provide for it himself.

James Verone had lost his job as a Coca-Cola delivery man after 17 years of working for them. Their final haul was worth 26 million.

The robbers could get in with the help of a security guard, who was the brother-in-law of one of the thieves. He had concluded that more than 60% of the valuables had already been removed from the tomb. He was caught when he tried to sell the chips online.

The plan was foiled by Edwards’ son, who just got home after finishing his military service.

The theft was first noted by Louis Broud, a painter. 2.6 million was stolen from the traveling Post Office train that night, which is more than 40 million by today’s standards. They supported claims of Wells’ involvement.

Cops have recovered only about R$8.9 million. That’s exactly what happened, when three guards at the Dar Es Salaam bank ran away with US$300 million. The outer door and its seal was open, and Howard found the insides in complete disarray. His body was exhumed just to confirm that he had died, and not pulled a trick to escape his recently acquired debts to the Duke of Buckingham.

The first haul is what the cops called the trial run. Their primary aim was to destroy any and all Jewish art and books. He claimed to be made the scapegoat by high-ranking officials. By the time they got there, it was too late. The main vault of the Diamond Center is located two floors below the ground. By the time he committed this particular crime, he was already wanted for quite a few others, as well as acts of rebellious discontent.

Blood and a female accomplice posing to be his wife entered the Tower of London under the pretext of viewing the Crown Jewels. When he stopped, he found out that the phone cables have been cut. The Proceeds of Crime Act prompts any bank to flag any cash transfer or deposit beyond a certain amount (usually 10,000). So Verone did the thing that – according to his self-proclaimed ‘logical mind’ – he should have done – rob a bank.

Circus Circus (1993), US$3 million

The thieves made a run for it, but were caught after a horse chase. When they entered the Jewel Room, the thieves covered Edwards with a cloak, struck him down, bound and gagged him, then stabbed him to keep him quiet. The police called for the bomb squad 30 minutes after the first 9-1-1 call was made. Bhrle Art Museum (2008), US$162 million

One-dollar Robbery (2011). They soon started to find those treasures with prostitutes and even in the fishing-nets on the river Thames! Most of the treasure was recovered, and after about half a dozen people were wrongly hanged and many more arrested and tortured and questioned, they finally caught Richard, who was quite boastful about it. He tried doing other jobs, but couldn’t keep them. So they had to leave all that cash hidden somewhere. The robbers dressed up as police and gained entry to the museum on St. The paintings were feared burned off, until they were recovered in 2006, with repairable damage.

King Tut Tomb Robberies

Northern Bank (2004), 26.5 million

Verone thought this was a good idea, and on paper it may have seemed good to him – rob a bank for a small amount of money so the prison term won’t be too long, then go to jail and get medical attention paid for by the Government. He was calm, collected, charming, and devious. But to date, no one has been successfully caught for the heist. No one has been able to prove this; all incriminating evidence points to Notarbartolo and four others. But it should be noted that because of little or no media coverage or even official documentation, the numbers are all basically gross estimates.

The German Reichsbank held most of the Nazi gold and treasures during World War II. No concrete proof against any individual, let alone the IRA itself, has been found to date. When they were shown to the vault, the two pulled out their guns on the unsuspecting employees, the manager, and the guards. On that day, they broke in through the floor, and took whatever they could before anyone could find out and raise an alarm. Hitler, Goebbels, and Gring frequently visited the museums.

Antwerp Diamond Center (2003), US$100 million

Richard of Pudlicott (1303)

Anthony Carleo walks in to the Bellagio one day and demands the operators of the craps pit to come up with all the chips they have. The theft marks the loss of some of the most iconic artworks ever made, including those of names like Rembrandt, Vermeer, Manet, and Degas.

The Scream (1994 and 2004)

E.G. The first two carriages had only a supervisor and a couple of unarmed employees, while the security was left in the carriages that they had uncoupled.

Blood had Edwards arrange a grand dinner party for him and his ‘cousin’ (another accomplice) along with some other ‘family members’ (more thieves). According to their statement, the thieves had planned to put a fake bomb on his neck, just to provide enough room for him to escape. All it was, was a president and his son, and a piece of paper.

Saddam Hussein was the President of Iraq at the time, and had complete control over the state activities and assets. When he got to the place, three men attacked him, subdued him, and put a metal collar around his neck. The son gained entry to the house, while Talbot Edwards managed to free himself and scream for help with all his strength.

But the crooks did it. Even though half the criminals have been nabbed, the other half, as well as a large sum of money still bathes in mystery.

The repercussions of the robbery were quite serious. Five others have also been arrested, with a few more still on the loose.

You can’t have Vegas without the dapper crooks and the gold-digging beauties. He was later hanged for his crime.

Gardner Museum (1990), US$500 million

The authorities received a note in 1931, demanding ransom for the return of the regalia. Most of the money has not been recovered because they were unmarked bills.

The train’s driver Jack Mills was prompted to stop at 3 AM by an odd red light. It would even have worked if it wasn’t for one minor glitch; Verone didn’t have a gun.

The big one came after closing time, for which the two captives were told to stay back at the bank. So it goes without saying that the place is heavily guarded. William was a sports book cashier at the hotel. The painting bore no damage in its two years of disappearance, during which time the Mona Lisa stayed with Peruggia at his apartment.

Nazi Looting During WW II (1933 to the end of WW II)

The scene turns out to be much, much shadier as the cops probe further. They put a message out on the front door saying that the vault was closed, while letting in more accomplices who were waiting outside. They carried the cages full of cash to their truck and ran off. All of this, of course, surrounded by an elite security patrol.

The ERR has recorded to claim more than 21,000 artwork, most of which was kept in Museum Jeu de Paume in Paris. Edwards was new to the job, and was possibly taken by Blood’s deceitful charm. But to get there, he would have to either gain entry through its entrance (and have to face the entire Royal Guard), or somehow go through the wall that protected the loot. Then they kidnapped his wife and kids. They were so meticulous that when the cops first inspected their house, it was covered in burnt lime to destroy any evidence like fingerprints and DNA.

Two major things got in the crooks’ way: one was their lack of planning of what to do after they robbed the place, and the other was the Proceeds of Crime Act. Vicars even refused to show up for the trial by the Commission, making matters worse. A lot of people were arrested, but had to be let go for lack of evidence.

The police managed to get back 19.7 million by March 2006. She agreed, but didn’t comply. But the detailing in the plan can be denied by no one.

Bank employee Chris Ward gets some uninvited ‘guests’ over, who force their way in and tie up him and his family. One of his biggest qualms against art came when he was rejected by the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts as a kid. Blood made the offer of having his cousin marry one of Edwards’ daughters, promising her quite a decent income by virtue of marriage and thereby gaining complete trust of the Edwardses.

Hotel/casino Robberies

The Great Train Robbery (1963), 2.6 million

The idea of the robbery was put forth to the group by an unknown individual who went by the name (or possibly alias) Ulsterman. He claimed that he was the only one involved in the crime and took the full ‘credit’ for the act himself.

The theft that happened on March 18, 1990 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is easily the biggest art theft, as well as the biggest theft of property in all of criminal history. Viccei would reiterate that he was not in it for the money, he just liked the rush of doing it, claiming that it was even better than sex.

Viccei’s crowning moment was at the Knightsbridge Deposit in the City of Westminster. Which is exactly what he did. One guy takes him away, while the others stay with the rest of the family till the robbery is completed. It’s one of those plots that just keeps getting thicker and thicker the deeper you get. Sometimes they involve robbing their own king’s most valuable treasures.

Richard of Pudlicott was a commoner and a wool merchant by profession. The collar had a metal box attached to it, which the assailants claimed was a bomb. It’s not certain exactly who robbed it, or how many robbed it, or where the gold went. He wore a full black attire with a black helmet. But one accomplice switched the fake with a real bomb, supposedly as a means to kill Wells so he wouldn’t blow the whistle on them.

Turns out Richard had already stolen from the crown once; a small loot that didn’t last long. The paintings by Van Gogh, Czanne, Degas, and Monet, have been valued at a total of US$162 million.

One of the biggest quandaries of art theft is that regular connoisseurs don’t buy stolen art. More than 20 criminals have been suspected, with only 8 of them arrested. Led by Leonardo Notarbartolo, a five-man group infiltrated the vault and got hold of gold, diamonds, and jewelry worth more than US$100 million. Sometimes it can be truly difficult why someone would go through all that effort for things that actually can’t be sold. They got away with a total of R$164 million (US$71 million at 2005 exchange rate). He solved this problem by sowing hemp seed near the wall. He found most of it when he stole things. The bank had already called for the cops, who got there by the time Wells was out of the bank. And then some are just bat-crap crazy.

They opened as many safe deposit boxes as they could, gathering valuables worth around 60 million. The two bank employees are then given specific instructions and made to go to work the next day as if everything was fine.

We’ve always admired human determination and ingenuity, even when it was used for all the wrong things. Patrick’s Day, claiming to have gotten reports of disturbance in the area. Indeed, born in 1955, he came to London for the high life, after being wanted in his home, Italy, for 50 instances of armed robberies. The underground art dealing world has been valued at billions of dollars annually, but the deals have to be carried out with the tightest of lips and the most firm of handshakes. Viccei was the son of a lawyer and would stop at nothing to fill his life with excitement. The reasons as to why the King did this are not really clear, and is a mystery. Notarbartolo later claimed that he and the other thieves were set up by a diamond dealer who was looking to claim money off an insurance fraud. The thief was Vincenzo Peruggia, an employee at the Louvre. Vicars was still blamed for failing to act promptly when he received the message that the regalia was missing from its safe.

It is incredibly frustrating when you have people that rob you after you’ve placed all your trust in them. Nevertheless, this was one of the weirdest robberies in history, with some who still believe that there are mountains of sacks filled with gold hidden somewhere in Germany, that belonged to the Reichsbank.

Art Robberies

Collar-bomb Robbery (2003), US$8,700

The robbery of Banco Central in Fortaleza, Brazil, has to be one of the most deviously orchestrated heists in history. Carleo left with US$1.5 million worth of chips.

He was arrogant enough to call himself the “Biker Bandit” and the “Cranberry Kid”, because he rode off on a bike, and the US$25,000 cranberry-colored chips that he stole. They are often charming, exceptionally smart, and even good-looking; sometimes coming very close to their movie and TV counterparts. And even if you want to get across all of this, you’re still to start out with a lock system with 100 million possible combinations. The two bankers withdraw 1 million, put it in a bag and hand it over to one of the criminals. Between dinner preparations, Blood convinced Edwards to show his guests the Crown Jewels. So when they went missing, all of Ireland was in an uproar.

Arthur Vicars, the Officer of Arms at the Dublin Castle, was the first suspect in the case embroiled in mystery and confusion. But by that time, the masked robbers were already making their way into the engine. The basic story is something like this:

On August 28, 2003, Brian Wells was sent to deliver pizza. This is one of the biggest reasons why crime is so glorified in movies, because it’s sometimes true in real life as well.

The gem district in Antwerp, Belgium, is the place through which 80% of the world’s rough-cut diamonds go through. More than 2-3 billion dollars of trade happens here every year. There, they gained the friendship of Talbot Edwards, the Master of the Jewel House. The police say that this was done just to ensure that nothing stinks for the robbers.

Hitler’s appetite for destruction knew no bounds. One such crook was Roberto Solis, the mastermind behind the movie-like Circus Circus theft of ATM cash in 1993.

Solis had just gotten out of prison for a robbery attempt, in which he shot and killed a security guard. The thieves demanded a ransom of US$1 million, which the museum refused, while aiding a police sting operation to successfully recover the painting.

Called the biggest cash robbery in the U.K., the guys who pulled it off, left with about 52 million of nothing but cold, hard notes. After his ‘talk’ with the King, he was not only pardoned, but was given a land in Ireland and 500 a year. He and an accomplice walked right in, asking about renting out a safe deposit box for themselves. He lived the rest of his life as a legend and died in 1680. They say it’s just for fun, but it’s anything but that for the authorities.

Thieves mostly fail, but some that succeed can continue to live on as legends. Fingers were pointed, and one of those was straight at French poet Guillaume Apollinaire and his Spanish painter friend, Pablo Picasso. At the same time, his physical condition was getting worse. Blood was arrested, but he refused to speak to anyone except the King.

The figure in the painting looks scared for good reason: it is so popular that thieves can’t keep their grubby hands off it.

The first time the painting was stolen was in 1994, during the Winter Olympics. With everything ranging from movies to media coverage or rumors to political cover-ups, our view of crime becomes a bit skewed. But every once in a while, we come across this rare act that, in its core is bad, but we can only be flat-out impressed about the way it was done. This included the Central Bank of Iraq. By the standard of that time, that money was almost equal to an entire year’s worth of tax collection for the entire Kingdom of England! This is how he did it:

When the King heard of this, he ordered the crown officials to search for the valuables. Despite that, it took Howard and his team eight years to document and carefully remove the remaining contents of the tomb, then transporting it to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Theft of the Irish Crown Jewels (1907)

The Mona Lisa (1911)

One-of-a-kind Robberies

One of the quietest robberies in any casino’s history, suspected crook William John Brennan simply walked off with $500,000 worth of cash and chips from the Stardust Hotel and Casino. Then, for Hitler’s self-proclaimed artistic taste, the ERR was to “collect” basically anything culturally important that was present in the occupied countries.

We’ve seen the playboys and the determined. One of the reasons they took 52 million was because the truck couldn’t carry any more; it was full.

Everyone has their own reason to act. Here’s how.

They rented out a vacant house two blocks away from the bank three months before the robbery. The introduction of gloves changed the entire pulse of the game.

Shortly after this era, in the 20th century, boxing, through its highs and lows came to be recognized as a prominent part of society and featured many influential promoters and legendary champions.

The Torch is Lit

After Jack Broughton’s era as a bare-knuckle champion, the interest of English aristocracy in boxing faced a decline. The upper class elites indulged in more noble forms of entertainment and regarded boxing as a savage sport.

Establishments like World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) began pitching competitions against each other. Yet, he steadfastly voiced his opinion about being against the whole idea of the Vietnam War and went on to inspire the likes of Martin Luther King Jr.

The wealthy English aristocrats began to patronize bare-knuckle fights among the boxers whom they chose. This was when the term ‘boxing’ was coined.. Boxing event organizers, promoters and managers generated a heavy amount of finance through their work. This was the period when the people of Europe looked keenly into their ancient sources of knowledge and wisdom and tried to incorporate them in their daily lives. Gambling and betting on the fighters came to be a rage with huge stakes involved. One such name that rose to prominence was a London-based pugilist called Daniel Mendoza. This was followed with the establishment of boxing commissions, legal sanctioning and governing bodies.

Daniel Mendoza was a Jewish fighter and so was often referred to as ‘the Jew’.

A lot of fights began to be arranged during this time leading to a lot of new pugilists rising to popularity.

The ‘Marquess of Queensberry Rules’ borrows the name from the 9th Marquess Of Queensberry, Sir John Sholto Douglas.

In 1838 came the introduction of the ‘London Prize Ring Rules’ which were to be revised later in 1853. Sullivan (Boston Strong Boy) and James J. Sugar Ray Robinson (1940-1965): One of the few sportsmen who have a commemorative stamp in their name, he is regarded as one of the greatest boxers to ever have set foot inside the ring.

Muhammad Ali (1960-1981): Possibly a living example of why boxing is called a lethal sport, Muhammad Ali has been revered all over the world as one of the greatest boxers ever. In this quest of gaining knowledge from the sources of antiquity, the curious Europeans stumbled upon ancient references to boxing which triggered a renewed interest in the sport. The competitors were divided into lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight in accordance to their physical characteristics which broadened the possibilities of participation. Chambers was also an honored member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He also has a record of winning 73 matches in a row. But still, boxing was in a very rudimentary form, in that there were no defined rules and regulations about any aspect of the sport. But popularity always has a price to pay. The whole vibe and accord of times that saw these champions in action is ineffable and still vests in the hearts of many.

So, in ancient times, boxing was in a very primitive stage. Some of the basic rules that shaped conventional boxing since then, includedThe use of ‘mufflers’ or padded gloves, Prohibition to attack and grapple an opponent below the waist, and Disqualifying a player if he was unable to get up and fight back within a prescribed time limit of 30 seconds, after being knocked down by his opponent. Broughton is said to have formalized these rules after he injured an opponent in a prize-fight so severely that he eventually died. While he himself was trained in boxing as a young man, he also promoted it as a manly sport. The resurrection of boxing finally came about. Despite being an underrated sport today, boxing still finds a huge fan following amongst fierce and passionate boxing lovers.

Glamor to the Glitz

Rocky Marciano (1948-1955): One of the hardest punchers of all times, Marciano remained undefeated in all the 49 matches which he played. However, the sport itself fell into a state of obscurity after the downfall of the Roman Empire. Moreover, every new kid on the block, brought with him his own style of fighting (staying within the framework of Broughton’s rules) which gained more and more fame for the sport. Sometimes, the fights became so intense and vehement that they resulted in the death of one of the fighters. This definitely makes him one of the greatest boxers of all times.

18th century Europe saw the age of Enlightenment. Players were prohibited from wearing boots with springs or even from hugging the opponent or wrestling with him. He, however, returned to the boxing ring in the 1970s.

Did you know?A British periodical, London Protestant Mercury, featured the victory of James Figg in bare-knuckle championship in 1719 for the first time ever in the history of prizefighting. The ‘Marquess of Queensberry Rules’ were finally published in 1867. It was one of those competitive sports wherein contestants either lived or died, or in some cases suffered irreparable injuries. Increasing Reading Comprehension by Activating Prior Knowledge

Check your local book store or favorite book selling website. Over time, the child will find it easier and easier to make connections with a text they must read.

Once you have found a book that will work, read it with your child and help them to look for connections to the text so they can practice activating prior knowledge.

A lot of times students immediately say that the book doesn’t remind them of anything in their lives. Start slowly.

Many students are not able to relate to a text when they are reading. It should be age appropriate and interesting to the child. They feel like they are just forced to read something that has nothing to do with them. Deeper, more thematic connections will come with time and practice as they increase reading comprehension and improve reading speed.

Making a connection with a book is a learned skill for struggling readers. The first ones can be very surface level just to practice. When good readers read a book, they often find things in the book that will remind them of their own experiences or experiences of others. Making these kind of connections help the reader to understand the book and empathize with the characters, which will then increase reading comprehension. They begin to see themselves in the book and relate to the story. Good readers always do this without thinking about it, but it is a skill that can be easily learned. First read books that will be easy to connect with, and then move on to more difficult books that will be interesting and more difficult to read. For example, if you are reading one of the Harry Potter books, you may find yourself remembering how difficult fitting in at school was when you were a child. Do not settle for that kind of answer! They do not need to find deep and meaningful connections at first. If your child is not a reader, pick something that is similar to the child’s favorite television show or movie. One of the best things you can do to help a struggling reader increase reading comprehension (and why he or she is reading it), is help them to relate to a text. . Then, instead of seeing words on a page that make no sense, they will begin to see characters and stories that they can relate to and remember. It takes time and effort to increase reading comprehension. Many popular children’s television shows and movies sometimes have books written to tell other stories with the characters. First, pick a text to read with your child. If the only connection your son can find with Harry Potter is that they are both boys, then go with it

A second string quarterback will be starting for the Bears against the leagues second best defense. Their run of good fortune ends when the #1 defense in the NFL goes to Arizona on Monday night.

The Bills defense is very impressive and they still are not eliminated from playoff contention, they will win this game handily.

The Titans have one of the worst rushing defenses in the league, they are unsettled at quarterback and playing on the road. Rodgers may throw for 4+ TD’s this week!

Arizona continues to win and has been very impressive in the face of sever adversity this season. Louis- Rams

Rex Ryan is going to be gone after this year but he does not like the Patriots. Baltimore at Houston- Ravens

RG III is starting again and will likely want to prove a point, the problem is that the Eagles are playing for their playoff lives and will come out motivated and ready to play.

The Rams are trending up and the Giants are trending down, another coach on the hot seat. That was better than all 13 ESPN experts last week and puts my overall record at 150-74 for a 66.9% correct pick ratio.

Seattle at Arizona- Seahawks

Cleveland at Carolina- Panthers

Indianapolis at Dallas- Colts

New England at NY Jets- Patriots

Detroit at Chicago- Lions

Another team trying to separate itself and cannot afford to stumble. Both teams are pretty bad but the Jags have more going for them at this point than the Titans do.

NY Giants at St. If they can force the Vikings rookie QB to pass over and over the line should be able to get some pressure on him.

Minnesota at Miami- Dolphins

The Steelers are explosive on offense and the Chiefs are not if their running game can be slowed down. Flacco is a Superbowl winning quarterback and should be able to handle the pressure the Texans will try to bring.

Green Bay at Tampa Bay- Packers

Packers played poorly and were beaten by the Bills last week, the Bucs just put their best defensive player on IR this week. This could get ugly.

Johnny Football should have a little more success this week against the Panthers defense but I look for him to struggle for a second week in a row.

Philadelphia at Washington- Eagles

Andrew Luck steps up against a good Cowboys team and proves why he is going to be the next great quarterback in the NFL.

Tennessee at Jacksonville- Jaguars

San Diego at San Francisco- Chargers

Harbaugh could be on his way out, another defensive player is gone from the team due to personal conduct, Frank Gore and Vernon Davis are suddenly not producing like they were last year which means the Chargers, who are still in the playoff race at 8-6 should win this game.

Last week was my best week yet, 14-2 with my only incorrect predictions being Green Bay losing to the Bills and the Eagles losing to the Cowboys
